Minari (12A)

Lee Isaac Chung’s Oscar-nominated tale of a Korean family putting down roots in 1980s Arkansas.

Yearning to own a small patch of land and be more than a factory worker, the ambitious father, Jacob (Steven Yeun) relocates his Korean-American family, Monica (Han Ye-ri), and their children, David (Alan Kim) and Anne (Noel Kate Cho), from California to 1980s rural Arkansas, to start afresh and capture the elusive American Dream. However, new beginnings are always challenging, and to find out what is best for the family, let alone start a 50-acre farm to grow and sell Korean fruits and vegetables, is easier said than done. But, amid sincere promises, cultural unease, fleeting hopes, and the ever-present threat of financial disaster, Jacob is convinced that he has found their own slice of Eden in the rich, dark soil of Arkansas. Can grandma Soonja’s (Youn Yuh-jung) humble but resilient minari (Korean water celery) help the Yi family figure out their place in the world?

Pavarotti (12A)

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard tells the colourful, unforgettable story of legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti. The late singer’s life was anything but straightforward.
Howard takes viewers from deep in the Amazonian jungle, where the Italian giant wants to sing on a famous stage, to Italy, New York, and the moving Three Tenors concert that made “Nessun dorma” a worldwide phenomenon and resulted in the best-selling classical music album of all time.
Along the way, the film covers everything from Pavarotti’s impoverished childhood and his early days as “King of the High C’s” to his support for Jose Carreras when his singing rival falls ill, his recording career, and all the twists and turns of his hectic love life.
