Ricky Baker is a mixed-up child: he’s an arsonist, a vandal, and a frightened and lonely little boy who’s far from home. He’s also at the centre of a hilarious cross-country manhunt in beautiful New Zealand.HFTW01

Join wannabe “gangsta” Ricky as he goes on the run with his grumpy foster dad Hec in Hunt for the Wilderpeople (cert. 12A), the latest presentation from Monico Movies.

Showing on Saturday, July 14, this terrific heart-warming comedy has a 97% rating on leading review website Rotten Tomatoes. It follows Ricky (rising star Julian Dennison) and Hec (Sam Neill) as they are thrown together in the beautiful but dangerous wilderness. Due to various mix-ups and a social services worker who’s out of her depth, they become an unlikely pair of outlaws. As things get desperate, will their Kiwi spirit help them overcome their differences and make it to freedom?

After our August break, we return on 8th September with the Oscar-nominated Hidden Figures (cert. PG), a riveting drama about life behind the scenes of the space race.hidden_figures_ver2_xlg

Starring multi-award-winner Octavia Spencer, Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson, and singer/actress Janelle Monáe, alongside Kevin Costner and Kirsten Dunst, it tells the powerful true story of the African-American women whose mathematical and scientific skills helped put an American into space for the first time.

The trio of strong-willed women want to play their part in this daring and dangerous mission. But to do so they and the other “hidden figures” must overcome racism, sexism, and powerful forces both within and outside NASA.

For a complete change of pace, and an unforgettably funny tribute to classic horror films, join us on 13th October for Young Frankenstein (cert. PG). Directed by comic genius Mel Brooks, it stars Gene Wilder as a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein. As a straight-laced physician he is keen to avoid any connection to his infamous ancestor. However, when he inherits a castle in Transylvania and is met by a hunchbacked servant (the unique Marty Feldman) and beautiful assistant (Teri Garr), he begins a new plan… YoungFrank_

Filled with all the comic moments you expect from the man behind Blazing Saddles and The Producers, the film is also an affectionate parody of black-and-white horror classics. It has storms, stolen brains, and odd characters with mysterious European accents. All this and a loveable monster and the funniest version of “Puttin’ On the Ritz” you’ll ever see. Don’t miss it!

Tickets for each film will be on sale at our usual suppliers—Serenade, Deri Stores, The Honeypot and the Victoria Fearn Gallery. Doors at the Canolfan Beulah Church Community Centre, Beulah Road, Cardiff, CF14 6LX, open at 7pm and the films start at 7.30pm.

See you all soon at Monico Movies, your Rhiwbina Community Cinema.
